Tomato Pappu


1 cup Toor Dal

2 cups Water

2 cups Tomatoes, chopped

5-6 Green Chilies, slit lengthwise

1/2 tsp Turmeric

1 tbsp Tamarind Paste

Salt as needed

1 tbsp Oil

Ghee as needed

Curry leaves

1/2 tsp Cumin seeds

1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds

1/4 tsp Hing

4-5 Garlic Cloves, sliced

3-4 Red chilies


In a pressure cooker, add Toor Dal, water, tamarind paste, tomatoes, green chilies, oil and turmeric.

Pressure cook on medium flame for 3 whistles.

Once the pressure is released, add salt and mash the Dal well.

Heat ghee in a tadka pan.

Add cumin, mustard. When they begin to splutter, add garlic, red chilies, curry leaves and Hing. Fry till the leaves turn crisp.

Pour the tadka onto the mashed dal and mix well.

Serve tomato pappu with hot rice, ghee and avakaya.
